Wellness Development: Stress Reduction

Our November 10th meeting and potluck will be about stress reduction, a topic that is easy to ignore, yet essential to health. Bob will start us out and then we'll break into small groups. The focus will be chapter 6 from Dr. Ornish's book, The Spectrum. Chapter 6 is called "The Stress-Management Spectrum." You might want to check it out beforehand, but don't worry if you don't have the book. The group leaders will get you up to speed.

We had great success with our new method of collecting annual membership dues in September, but a few are still outstanding. Please remember to send your dues to Maureen Parker, 111 Garden Drive, Fairport, NY 14450. Or, bring your dues to Monday's meeting. Josie Mammano, HFL membership chair, will collect your dues when you check in, if that's more convenient. ($25. per person and $35. per family. Make your check out to Heartbeat for Life, please.)

Wellness Development: The Role of Volunteerism and Hobbies in Staying Healthy

Dr. Ornish's program is distinguished by a comprehensive approach to changing our lives toward health, including psychological and spiritual dimensions. He points out the power of volunteer activity in maintenance of health and joy. While volunteer activity benefits others, it's also good for the volunteer. It reduces isolation and increases intimacy, a powerful, positive element in healthy living.

At this meeting, the small group format will allow everyone to listen and share something about their lives. We hope that you will be willing to talk about some special activity which lowers stress levels and brings joy, perhaps a hobby, or a relationship, or a volunteer connection.
